Louisiana-Monroe has hired Matt Viator as its new football coach, according to multiple reports.
Gene Ponti of the NBC affiliate in Monroe first reported the news.
Viator has been the head coach at McNeese State for the past 10 seasons. In that time, Viator did not have a losing season posting a 77-33 overall record. He led the Cowboys to four Southland Conference four times — including this season — and the FCS playoff in five seasons, including this year. The Cowboys lost in the second round.
Viator is the only coach in Southland Conference history not to have a losing record in eight or more seasons.
Viator takes over for Todd Berry, who was fired after six seasons. Berry’s best season came in 2012 when the Warhawks went 8-5 and played in the Independence Bowl. ULM’s seasons went progressively worse following that peak. The Warhawks finished this season 1-9 and 0-6 in Sun Belt play. It was Berry’s worst season during his tenure.
