Add two more names to the list of underclassmen declaring early for the NFL draft.
Nebraska defensive lineman Maliek Collins and Arizona wide receiver Cayleb Jones, both juniors, announced their intention to forgo their senior seasons and move on to the pros over the weekend.
Collins informed reporters of his decision after the Huskers upset UCLA in the Foster Farms Bowl on Saturday night. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the 6-foot-2, 300-pound Collins said he received a “good” grade from the NFL draft advisory board. After talking it over with head coach Mike Riley, Collins reached a decision.
“It’s always been a dream of mine,” Collins said. “I talked it over with my teammates and I talked it over with coach Riley and it seems like the best decision for me.”
Added Riley: “This was a wise move based on what what he knows. I’d really like to coach him another year, but we’ll really have fun watching him play.”
Collins registered 29 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks this season. He also added 45 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 2014 as a sophomore and 12 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack in 2013 as a true freshman.
Elsewhere, Jones announced his decision to leave Arizona on Twitter on Sunday, more than a week after the Wildcats finished their season with a win over New Mexico in the New Mexico Bowl.
Jones spent the past three seasons at Arizona after beginning his career at Texas. He quickly emerged as a playmaker for the Wildcats after redshirting his first year on campus in 2013.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Jones caught 73 passes for 1,019 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014 and followed it up with 55 catches for 904 yards and five scores this year.
Jones is the second Arizona player to declare for the NFL as an underclassman. Linebacker Scooby Wright announced his decision to go pro right after the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 19.
