Tulane football has wised up and is heading out of town.

Early Monday morning, spokesman Roger Dunaway told Yahoo! Sports the team had no plans to evacuate, but that changed later in the morning after the athletic department met and decided it would be in the best safety interest of the team to bus to Birmingham, Ala., while they wait for the storm to pass.

The team has canceled Tuesday's weekly press conference, Wednesday's fan day and coach Curtis Johnson's radio show. As of right now, there is no plan to cancel the season opener on Sept. 1 against Rutgers in the Superdome.

Also, all classes after 5 p.m. have been canceled and the campus will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tulane will share UAB's field while they prepare for their season opener. This isn't the first time the Green Wave has had to evacuate to Alabama. Prior to the 2008 season opener against Alabama, the Green Wave left Louisiana because of Hurricane Gustav and ended up practicing at Stamford.

Tulane will watch the storm and return to New Orleans as soon as it's safe to do so. Rutgers still plans to fly to New Orleans on Friday.

"We have a no-excuse team," Johnson said. "There are no excuses. There's just stuff that you can't foresee. All we are doing is getting the best accommodations and the best plan… We'll just get ready to play and we won't have any excuses on Saturday night."
