The program announced Sunday that it has “mutually decided to part ways” with Jake Spavital. Spavital had been with the A&M program for the past three seasons.

“I want to thank Jake for his time here and for his important role in our program,” head coach Kevin Sumlin said in a release. “He is a bright, young coach with a tremendous future in coaching and we wish him all of the best in his career.”

Spavital first arrived at A&M in 2013 as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. He was then promoted to offensive coordinator prior to the 2014 season.

“I want to thank Coach Sumlin for an amazing opportunity in College Station and I leave here proud of our program and our accomplishments,” Spavital said. “I look forward to the next step in my coaching journey and I wish the Aggies nothing but the best.”

Spavital’s departure was an expected one after an up-and-down season for the Aggies, who finished 8-5. With Spavital, 30, calling plays, the offense struggled this season, finishing 10th in the SEC in scoring offense and struggling with consistency and red zone efficiency.

Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray were shuffled in and out at quarterback throughout the season, and both decided to transfer after the regular season came to an end.

Before his time at A&M, Spavital was a graduate assistant under Sumlin and Dana Holgorsen at Houston. When Holgorsen left Houston to become the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, Spavital joined the OSU as a graduate assistant.

Holgorsen then accepted the head coaching job at West Virginia and took Spavital with him as the Mountaineers’ quarterbacks coach. Spavital served in that capacity in 2011 and 2012 before joining A&M.
