The NCAA is nicely suggesting that Penn State return the six bowl trophies it earned from 1998-2011.
After vacating all of the Nittany Lions' wins from 1998-2011 as part of its NCAA sanctions, the NCAA also wants the six bowl trophies the university won during that span. That includes the Outback Bowl (1998, 2006) and Alamo Bowl twice (1999, 2007), the Orange Bowl (2005) and the Capital One Bowl (2010).
Jason Bristol of CBS21 originally reported that the NCAA wanted the trophies returned to the bowls, but is now softening its stance saying it's merely suggesting that Penn State take that action.
"As a correction to our statement last week, the NCAA did not specifically direct Penn State to return its trophies from vacated bowl wins as a part of its sanctions," said Christopher Radford, the NCAA's associate director of public and media relations. "As such, Penn State and each bowl operator must decide what is appropriate. When a vacated championship involves an NCAA-administered game, the NCAA does require the school to return its trophy."
Onward State, the school paper, reported that all of the trophies had been removed from the trophy case in the Lasch Building lobby, but it is unclear whether the school intends to return them back to the NCAA.
