Florida sophomore defensive back Jalen Tabor had some harsh words about the NCAA and the SEC on Tuesday when he voiced his opinion regarding the amount of money the SEC made last year.
"The SEC Made 527.4 Million in Total Revenue and Players Ain’t Get A Penny. Modern Form Of Slavery,” Tabor wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
His outrage stemmed from a USA Today report that audited the SEC’s tax returns from Sep. 1, 2014-Aug. 31, 2015, the first year of the SEC Network and the College Football Playoff. USA Today noted the $527.4 million figure was 60 percent more than the conference received during the final year of the BCS.
While NCAA amateurism rules prohibit student-athletes from profiting off themselves, Tabor isn’t exactly being accurate when he says collegiate players “ain’t get a penny.”
According to CollegeData.com, the tuition cost for an out-of-state student (Tabor is from Washington D.C.) to attend the University of Florida is just under $29,000. Tabor receives room and board as part of his scholarship, and he and his fellow athletes also receive a cost-of-attendance stipend of $3,320 spread out over 10 months.
Of course, this is a small number compared to the SEC’s total revenue or even the salaries of the men who coach these players. Still, the desire for players to be fairly compensated by those who are making money off their play and their likenesses is on ongoing legal battle. The NCAA already lost against Ed O’Bannon, who is the face of the case, but is currently appealing.
After some backlash, Tabor did take to Twitter to apologize for his comment.
Went to far with the slavery thing and I apologize , can't let my emotions get to me . But y'all get the message
