Alabama coach Nick Saban visited President Barack Obama as a college football champion for the fourth time Wednesday.
The Crimson Tide, who beat Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship, visited the White House for the customary sports post-championship visit. When welcoming the team, Obama made the joke that you could call him "O-Bama." Yes, like Alabama.
Saban first visited Obama in 2010 and Alabama has been back in 2012 and 2013. The three-year gap led Obama to joke with Saban about how long it's taken him to come back to the White House.
During his remarks, Obama made sure to mention his meeting with 2015 Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. The two met at the National Prayer Breakfast.
"I met Derrick last month at the National Prayer Breakfast, and we struck a Heisman pose together," Obama said. His looked a little more intimidating than mine. "But I want to point out that Derrick wasn’t just there to pose for pictures with fans.
"He led a gathering in a powerful – and humble – prayer. And he prayed not just for the leaders in the room, but also for – and I'm quoting him now – 'people who weren’t able to eat breakfast' that day; 'people who don’t have clothes on their back or shoes on their feet.' You could see Derrick’s character in those words. This is a kid who grew up running down dirt roads, and raised on his grandma’s oxtail stew. And so he knew something about hardship, and was remembering that hardship in his prayer."
Henry, who ran for 2,219 yards in 2015 declared for the NFL draft after the season.
