(AP Photo/Rainier Ehrhardt)The injury bug has reportedly bit South Carolina at the quarterback position again.

According to The State, Gamecocks senior signal caller Perry Orth will miss the rest of spring practice after breaking his collarbone during a scrimmage on Saturday. Orth is the second USC quarterback injured during spring ball, joining sophomore Lorenzo Nunez, who suffered a hyperextended knee a week prior. Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp told reporters last week that Nunez’s injury is “not serious.”

The school has not confirmed Orth’s injury. The State is reporting that he should be able to “rejoin the team’s summer activities by June.”

Orth, who started eight games for the Gamecocks last season, had been taking many of the team’s first-team snaps throughout the spring. He is one of five, along with Nunez, junior Connor Mitch, sophomore Michael Scarnecchia and freshman Brandon McIlwain, who have been competing for the starting role.

The quarterback position was a weakness for the Gamecocks last season. Mitch opened the year as the starter, but missed much of the season with various injuries. Orth, a former walk-on, and Nunez, a dual-threat, split snaps the rest of the season. Orth threw for 1,929 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions while Nunez threw for 376 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 375 yards on 59 carries.

McIlwain, a four-star early enrollee, has been seeing time with the second team.

Muschamp has said there is no timetable to name a starter and that the competition could continue into fall camp.
