The University of New Mexico on Friday awarded a posthumous degree to Markel Byrd, a redshirt sophomore defensive back who was killed in a car crash a couple days before Christmas.
The UNM Board of Regents approved the honor.
Byrd, 20, and his girlfriend, Alexus Ortiz, were driving to Byrd’s home in San Diego when their car suffered a blowout on Interstate 40 near Gallup, N.M. Both were ejected from the vehicle. Byrd was killed instantly, according to a release from the school at the time. Ortiz was critically injured.
Byrd tied for the team lead with three interceptions last season and had 44 tackles.
