Baylor leading WR KD Cannon has 'minor' knee surgery

Baylor’s top returning receiver will have knee surgery.

A school spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com that KD Cannon, a junior, will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday. The spokesman referred to the surgery as “minor.”

As of now, there is no indication as to how long the surgery will sideline Cannon. Cannon caught 57 passes for 868 yards and six touchdowns in 2015 and had 58 catches for 1,030 yards and eight scores in 2014, so it would be a big blow for the Bears’ offense if he were to miss some game action.

Baylor’s roster has seen a heavy dose of attrition in the fallout of the investigation into the school’s handling of sexual assault allegations. That investigation led to the firing of Art Briles. Subsequently, more than half of Baylor’s 2016 signing class opted not to stay with the team. Talented sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham (the projected No. 2 QB on the team) also decided to transfer.

Former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe joined the fold in the role as acting head coach. In recent interviews, he indicated that the team is down to about 70 scholarship players – so depth is an issue heading into fall camp.

The Bears open the 2016 campaign with two home games – one against FCS Northwestern State on Sept. 2 and another against SMU on Sept. 10.
