Buffalo backup running back injured during touchdown celebration

Buffalo backup running back James Potts is probably too young to remember Bill Gramatica or the infamous celebration that put him on injured reserve with a torn ACL, but he can certainly sympathize.

After rushing for a 49-yard score against Morgan State last weekend, Potts did a mild hop while pounding his chest in celebration and immediately tumbled to the ground.

Buffalo coach Jeff Quinn said he didn't know the extent of Potts' injury, but he did know he wouldn't be available for the Bulls' Sept. 19 game against Kent State.

"The James Potts situation right now is we're getting a full workup on him and unfortunately it doesn't look good at this point," Quinn said during Monday's Mid-American Conference coaches conference call. "I know we'll be losing him for the next game [Sept. 19 against visiting Kent State] and maybe multiple games and potentially, who knows, it may be the whole season."

Potts scored the touchdown on just his second collegiate touch. He missed last season because of academic issues but had come back this fall to push starter Branden Oliver.

"It's really disappointing just because of how hard he's worked [on and off the field]," Quinn said.

This really is too bad especially since the celebration was fairly routine after the score. It just looks like his right cleat gets stuck in the turf and it causes the injury. Buffalo has a lot of depth at tailback behind Oliver, but you hate to see any player's season potentially end like this.
