Report: Oregon State TE Caleb Smith no longer with program

Bad news for Oregon State’s offense emerged Wednesday.

Danny Moran of The Oregonian is reporting that senior tight end Caleb Smith is “no longer with the team.” Smith was by far the most-experienced tight end on the Beavers’ roster. No reason for the departure is known at this time.

Smith arrived in Corvallis as a highly-rated recruit. He made an instant impact, catching 25 passes for 343 yards and four scores as a true freshman. He also had 20 catches for 202 yards and a score in 2014, but only played in two games last year due to “an undisclosed illness.” The 6-foot-6, 258-pound Smith made 16 starts during his three seasons with OSU.

Redshirt freshman Tuli Wily-Matagi is now the Beavers’ starting tight end, according to The Oregonian. Wily-Matagi was a three-star recruit in 2015.

Other players who could factor in the position are sophomore Noah Togiai, senior Ricky Ortiz and junior Jaylynn Bailey, who were listed on the fall depth chart at H-back.

The Beavers open up their 2016 slate on the road at Minnesota on Sept. 1.
