One of Nebraska’s football scholarships will be in the name of punter Sam Foltz.

Foltz was killed in a car accident July 23 with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler. Foltz was set to be a senior in 2016 and Nebraska announced Wednesday it would name a scholarship in his honor.

The Sam Foltz Memorial Scholarship will be presented annually to a member of the football program who embodied Foltz’s traits of leadership, excellence in the community and in the classroom.  The 2016 scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Huskers’ season opener against Fresno State on Sept. 3.

Michigan State, which is inducting Sadler into its hall of fame this fall and waiving the waiting period, has already said it would name a scholarship in his honor. Sadler was a senior in 2014 and was set to enroll in Stanford’s law school.

Here’s what the helmet decal for Foltz will look like. A school leadership award, which Foltz won in 2016, will be named in his honor going forward as well.

Foltz, a three-year starter for the Huskers, averaged a career-high 44.2 yards per punt in 2015.
