Clemson defensive end Austin Bryant will miss several weeks after suffering a foot injury during Monday’s practice.

Coach Dabo Swinney said the injury was a “freaky” thing and said he had a screw inserted into the bottom of his toe to repair it.

“Hate it for Austin,” Swinney said. “He had a great camp.”

While Swinney didn’t give an exact date of return, he said he hoped to have Bryant back by the Georgia Tech game in late September.

Bryant had 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery, and 1.5 sacks in 13 games last season. He made a name for himself during last year’s Capital One Orange Bowl when he came off the bench for the injured Shaq Lawson and made eight tackles, including a half sack.

Richard Yeargin likely will step in to fill Bryant’s role.
