Football at Fenway? Notre Dame denies report of possible game vs. UConn in Boston

There's something fun about games in unusual venues. The NHL's Winter Classic is fantastic, and college football games at Yankee Stadium, AT&T Park and Wrigley Field have been great to watch as well.

Fenway Park wants in on the college football action, more than four decades after it last hosted a football game. The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox want to host a football game at Fenway, and are looking at a 2014 date between Notre Dame and UConn.

The Globe reported that talks are in the early stages, although Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement that the report wasn't true.

"We have work to do on our future football schedules, given the announcement last week relative to our upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference relationship," Swarbrick said in the statement. "However, media reports today that we will play Connecticut in Fenway Park in 2014 are inaccurate."

However, the game makes sense from many different angles. Fenway would be a fantastic venue for a football game, Notre Dame (which would be giving up a home game, according to the report) could continue to serve its national fan base and UConn would get a lot of exposure out of the deal. Fenway Park hasn't hosted a football game since the Patriots played the Bengals on Dec. 1, 1968. The Globe said Fenway Park regularly hosted football games for the six decades before that.

For football, the field would presumably be set with the end zones along the third-base line and deep right field. That's how the field at Fenway was set up in the past for football and for some recent soccer games.

Here's hoping the deal eventually comes together. And there are a few other baseball stadiums that would make for fun college football venues. Baltimore's Camden Yards? Pittsburgh's PNC Park? Make it happen.
