Perhaps we’re nearing the point where Texas Gov. Greg Abbott should stop tweeting about sports altogether.
After Houston’s 40-16 win over Cincinnati, Abbott complimented the 3-0 Cougars on the road win. And used the wrong hashtag.
Congrats to Houston Cougars sealing the victory & remaining in hunt for National Championship. #HTownTakeDown @UHouston #HOUvsCIN
— Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) September 16, 2016
If you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you likely know it’s #HTownTakeover, not #HTownTakeDown, as Abbott tweeted. Why in the world would Houston want to take down its own city? The replies to the tweet are glorious, though the University of Houston itself declined to correct the governor.
@GregAbbott_TX Thanks for your support, looking forward to seeing you at the next game! ???? #GoCoogs

The mistake isn’t egregious at all — if this was Abbott’s first Houston sports-related screwup. But it isn’t.

In October, Abbott congratulated the Houston Astros for advancing to the American League Championship Series. That congratulatory tweet came with the Astros leading 6-2 in Game 4 of the Division Series vs. the Royals. Following Abbott’s tweet, the Royals stormed back to win the game and eventually the World Series.
For the Houston Texans’ sake, we hope Abbott tweets nothing about defensive end J.J. Watt this season.
