Four people were killed when the Ramah Junior College football team’s bus crashed on the way to the team’s game against University of God’s Chosen.

The crash occurred near Rockingham, North Carolina when the bus hit, among other things, a bridge, and burst into flames. Forty-two people were also injured in the crash and one of the fatalities was a 10-year-old boy. From WSOC TV in Charlotte:

State troopers said they believe that around 2:30 p.m. the front tire of the bus blew out, which caused it to slam into a median guardrail and sideswipe the bridge on Highway 74 near Hamlet.

Highway Patrol said Darice Hicks, 10, Teto Hamilton, 19, Devonte Gibson, 21, and bus driver Brian Andre Kirkpatrick, 43, died in the crash.

The news station reported many of the players for Ramah are also students at Clinton College. University of God’s Chosen is a nonprofit school located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Per WNCN, both teams are comprised of junior college students who attend two-year schools that don’t field football teams.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET and the highway was closed for nearly 10 hours afterwards.
