For the third time in less than two years, a Utah State player has been seriously injured in a car crash.
Per the Deseret News, Aggies safety Zach Swenson suffered a broken leg in a single-car accident on Thursday. USU coach Matt Wells told reporters that Swenson had surgery Friday and is expected to make “a complete recovery.”
“I’ve communicated with him and his father, and I think the surgery went well. It will be a very, very long recovery, but they think it will be a complete recovery,” Wells said. “So, we’ll get him back up here soon, but we feel very fortunate that that’s the only thing that happened.”
From the Deseret News:
Thursday night while coming down Logan Canyon, Swenson lost control of a Toyota Tacoma pickup in a curve and hit a rock wall east of the mouth of the canyon. Swenson and his passenger, Ryland Johnson, were both hospitalized following the accident.
“He was coming back out of the canyon; single-car accident and he sustained a broken leg,” Wells said.
Swenson, a freshman from Salt Lake City, is redshirting this season after serving a two-year LDS mission in San Diego. He signed with USU in the class of 2013.
In May, USU defensive lineman Brady Holt was critically injured after being ejected from his vehicle when his SUV drifted into the median and crashed into a construction site on I-15 near Willard, Utah. He is still recovering from his injuries.
Additionally, four USU players — Adewale Adeoye, Edmund Faimalo, Travis Seefeldt and John Taylor – were hospitalized in June 2015 following a car crash. All recovered and returned to the field for the Aggies. Adeoye, Faimalo and Seefeldt are still on the roster. Taylor exhausted his eligibility after the 2015 season.
Utah State dropped to 2-3 with a loss at Boise State over the weekend. The Aggies will travel to to Fort Collins to face Colorado State on Saturday.
