Kicker Josh Lambert has left West Virginia, coach Dana Holgorsen announced during his Tuesday press conference.
Lambert, a three-year starter who is second in team history with 69 field goals, was suspended for the first three games of 2016 and subsequently lost his starting job. He made one of his two field goal attempts in the win against Kansas State. Michael Molina, who had started in Lambert’s absence, has made five of his six field goal attempts this season.
The Gazette-Mail cited sources saying Lambert’s initial suspension, which was announced in April, was because of use of a banned substance.
In 2014, Lambert was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the nation’s best kicker, after he set an NCAA record of 16 field goals of 40 yards or longer. He made 30 of 39 field goals that season and his 135 points were second-most in the FBS.
He followed that season up by making 21 of 28 kicks in 2015.
