Despite everything that's happened at Penn State, there is still a faction of fans that believe in preserving the legacy of late coach Joe Paterno.
And they showed their loyalty on a billboard that popped up in State College this week. The billboard read: "You can't cover up 61 years of success with honor" with the words "cover up" highlighted.
The "cover up," of course, refers to the Freeh Report, which cited Paterno as part of a department-wide cover-up of the child sex abuse by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The Paterno family is still contesting the report.
While it's true Paterno did a lot of great things on the field, the one thing he didn't do — report Sandusky to the police and follow up on the report — will be the one thing many remember about him. It's a sad but undeniable truth, and the program will be forever marred because of it.
I don't think a strongly worded billboard can change that.
