University of San Diego takes a break to play an exhibition against Mexican team

University of San Diego will host Universidad De Las Americas Puebla on Saturday in a rare exhibition game. The game will not count toward the Toreros’ record or stats, but it’s still an interesting opportunity to face one of the top teams in Mexico.

Because the University of San Diego is a non-scholarship school, the NCAA allows such exhibitions. Last spring, Princeton played Kwansei Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan, as an exhibition.

While this is the first meeting between USD and UDLAP, it’s not the first time USD has played a team from Mexico. In 1957, the Toreros played two teams from Mexico, winning both — University of Mexico (27-13) and Mexico Polytechnic (54-0).

The exhibition game does come at a weird time considering the Toreros are first in the Pioneer Football League with a 6-0 record in conference and 7-1 overall. The Toreros have two more games before the end of the regular season.
