Trevor Knight’s lone season at Texas A&M has been cut short.

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said Tuesday the right shoulder injury Knight suffered in Saturday’s loss to Mississippi State would sideline him for the rest of the regular season. Sumlin, however, didn’t rule out a possible bowl game return for Knight.

Knight was replaced by backup Jake Hubenak, who will assume the starting role in his absence. The team could remove the redshirt on redshirt freshman Nick Starkel if it needs to as well.

Knight suffered the injury when he landed on his shoulder as he was tackled out of bounds. He attempted to throw on the sidelines but was in tremendous pain.

A graduate transfer from Oklahoma, Knight was having a successful campaign for the Aggies. Texas A&M was at No. 4 in the first set of College Football Playoff rankings before Saturday’s loss. The Aggies will likely be at the bottom of the top 10 when the new set of rankings comes out Tuesday evening.

Knight finishes the regular season 149-284 passing for 1,911 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. He had run for a career-high 583 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games. His previous high was 445 rushing yards in 2013 as a freshman.

He transferred to A&M as the Aggies had a dearth of quarterbacks following the departures of Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray. Both Allen and Murray saw playing time in 2015 and Allen transferred to Houston while Murray went to Oklahoma.

The injury also means it could be the second-straight season Hubenak finishes for the Aggies. He was the team’s starting quarterback in last season’s Music City Bowl. He finished the loss 28-48 passing for 307 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Hubenak is 23-38 for 350 yards passing in 2016 with three touchdowns and an interception.

In addition to Knight, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly and Middle Tennessee State quarterback Brent Stockstill also suffered season-ending injuries on Saturday. Kelly suffered a torn ACL while Stockstill broke a collarbone.
