Virginia Tech’s division title celebration will have to wait.

The Hokies had a chance to clinch the ACC Coastal Division with a win against Georgia Tech on Saturday, but squandered the opportunity at home and fell 30-20.

The win marked Georgia Tech’s first true road victory and the Hokies first home loss of the season.

The game was off to a bad start for Virginia Tech from the opening kick when Der’Woun Greene fumbled the opening kickoff, which set up the Yellow Jackets’ first field goal. Georgia Tech would add another field goal before Virginia Tech started to get some rhythm on offense. However, that rhythm was short-lived when the Hokies drove 55 yards only to miss a 38-yard field goal.

From there, Georgia Tech seized the momentum and went into half with a 20-0 lead while the home crowd booed Virginia Tech off the field.

However, the second half showed promise for the Hokies as they recovered a fumble on Georgia Tech’s first snap. Quarterback Jerod Evans found Isaiah Ford for a 5-yard touchdown and it looked like Virginia Tech was going to regain its poise.

After forcing a quick three-and-out, Virginia Tech marched into Georgia Tech territory, but an errant pass by Evans was nabbed Georgia Tech defensive back Lawrence Austin to stall the drive.

After turning the ball over on downs, the Hokies fumbled again and the Yellow Jackets ultimately turned the gaffe into a touchdown to take a 30-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Hokies committed four turnovers and Georgia Tech managed 17 points off those turnovers.

Virginia Tech added two touchdowns late, but it was too little too late.

While the Hokies didn’t clinch the ACC Coastal Division, they do remain in control of it thanks to North Carolina’s loss to Duke on Thursday. Virginia Tech plays Notre Dame next week before finishing the conference season at home against Virginia. If the Hokies defeat Virginia or North Carolina loses at N.C. State, the Hokies will be the Coastal Division champions. However, if Virginia Tech loses and UNC wins, the Tar Heels will play for the ACC title.
