As expected, Baylor quarterback Seth Russell won’t return to the field this year.
Russell, a senior, was carted off the field with a gruesome leg injury Saturday at Oklahoma, and the program confirmed Sunday that Russell will have season-ending surgery for a fractured left ankle. It’s the second year in a row that Russell has gone down with a season-ending injury. Last year, he was sidelined with a neck injury.
The ankle injury ends his collegiate career.
“Seth worked so hard to come back from the neck injury, and it’s not about losing the talent and production at quarterback, it’s more just like having one of your own children hurt,” acting head coach Jim Grobe said. “It breaks your heart to see a really, really good guy get hurt like that. Just really, really sad because you love the kid so much.”
After returning from his neck injury, Russell threw for 2,126 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Bears, who dropped to 6-3 with a loss Saturday. As a starter at Baylor, Russell had a 14-3 record. Overall, he threw for 5,461 yards (7th in program history), 60 touchdowns (3rd in program history) and 18 interceptions.

With Russell out, the program turns to true freshman Zach Smith. Smith has appeared in six games this season for the Bears and has completed 16-of-35 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. In relief of Russell on Saturday, Smith went 6-of-15 for 144 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown pass to KD Cannon.
Baylor started the season 6-0 but has now lost three in a row. Next on the schedule is a home game against Kansas State.
