Those crying for less bowl games can start celebrating, as the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl is bidding farewell after 12 years, the city’s bowl game association announced Wednesday.

The association’s board of directors voted to keep just one of its two games going forward in 2017: the Holiday Bowl.

“College football and the bowl game structure has gone through major changes through the years and our board feels the time is right to focus our efforts on one post-season game,” Mark Neville, executive director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association, said in a release. “The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl staged exciting match-ups for more than a decade and we were one of the few cities to host two bowl games.”

The San Diego Padres are in discussions about bringing the Holiday Bowl to Petco Park in case Qualcomm Stadium — former home of the Chargers — closes after 2018.

History will show that the final winner of the Poinsettia Bowl was BYU, which beat Wyoming 24-21 on Dec. 21. Cougars running back Jamaal Williams and linebacker Harvey Langi were the game’s offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively.

TCU will go down with the most Poinsettia Bowl wins, having posted three, while Navy’s four appearances in the contest are the high mark. (The Midshipmen went 2-2.)

Surely, next year’s 5-7 teams hoping to sneak into the postseason on the backs of their APR scores are already shaking their heads.
