Louisiana Tech revealed some great news about running back Jaqwis Dancy’s bout with cancer. Dancy, diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October, is cancer-free.
“It felt amazing when I heard the news that I am cancer-free,” Dancy said in a team statement. “It was something I have been waiting to hear since I was diagnosed and I can’t wait to share my happiness with all my teammates. I especially want to thank the LA Tech family and everyone who supported me in this fight. The support I have received since the beginning has been amazing. My biggest goal right now is to get back on the field with my teammates.”
Dancy underwent chemotherapy treatments at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis after his diagnosis. The school said he found out Thursday night that the cancer is gone. And all that’s left regarding his treatment is a couple of rounds of radiation.
Dancy returned 17 kicks for the Bulldogs in 2015 as a freshman and didn’t play in 2016 because of an ankle injury before his cancer diagnosis. The Hodgin’s lymphoma Dancy was diagnosed with is the same type of cancer Pitt running back James Conner had in 2015. Conner was deemed cancer-free in the spring of 2016 and played this fall before declaring for the NFL draft.
“It has been a tough fight for Jaqwis and his family,” Louisiana Tech coach Skip Holtz said. “There is still work to do, but this is certainly positive news to celebrate. As much as anything, I am thrilled for him and his mom for what they have been through.”
