David Reaves’ cup of coffee with Oregon proved to be a costly one for the school.

Reaves, who officially lasted 17 days as the Ducks’ co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, received a total of $63,750 from Oregon in compensation despite resigning Feb. 3 after being arrested on DUI and other charges, according to the Eugene Register-Guard, citing school documents obtained through a public records request.

Reaves received $3,750 for 26 hours of work, along with a $60,000 payment.

Reaves was hired Jan. 17 from USF on a two-year deal worth $300,000 annually but was arrested five days later on charges of DUII, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. Oregon had placed Reaves on administrative leave and was in the process of terminating his contract when he resigned Feb. 3.

The school has refused to release details of any separation agreement, according to the Register-Guard, which is appealing the denial. But the newspaper obtained a transaction through a separate request, leading to the discovery of a $60,000 “lump-sum payment according to agreement” approved Feb. 3, although Oregon won’t disclose the nature of that payment.

Oregon head coach Willie Taggart later replaced Reaves with Marcus Arroyo from Oklahoma State.
