Miami tried to surprise Georgia Tech with an onside kick to open the second half.
It didn’t work.
Michael Badgley’s kick didn’t go 10 yards, meaning it couldn’t be legally recovered by Miami, but none of Badgley’s teammates realized it was still a live ball. With basically no resistance, Georgia Tech’s Lamont Simmons scooped up the loose ball and ran 42 yards untouched for a Yellow Jackets touchdown.
Simmons’ touchdown increased Georgia Tech’s lead to 21-13. It came right after Miami cut the lead down to 14-13 with a long scoring drive right before halftime. The Hurricanes seemed like they were trying to capitalize on the positive momentum from the end of the half and catch Georgia Tech sleeping, but it backfired.
In the end, however, Miami overcame the gaffe and won 25-24 with a last-second field goal.
