Mack Brown still has a job at Texas — for now.
While many thought Brown was safe this year, no one could have predicted the near catastrophe that could have called all bets off regarding Brown's future with the Longhorns.
And Brown has backup quarterback Case McCoy for preserving his job status.
McCoy orchestrated a come-from-behind win that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds remaining to give the Longhorns the win.
Even though Texas escaped with the victory, no one in Longhorn Land should feel good about the outcome.
Texas came into the game favored by 19 points and should have wiped the floor with a Kansas squad that hadn't won a Big 12 conference game since beating Colorado in 2010.
But the Jayhawks were better than Texas. They used their running game to wear down the Longhorns' poor defense and waste clock. They had a 14-7 lead at half and had it not been for McCoy, the Longhorns should have won the game following a late field goal to go up 17-14.
Kansas forced two redzone turnovers and stopped two redzone trips in the third quarter.
So where does Texas go from here?
It's clear the defense hasn't gotten any better and could be in for a world of hurt against Texas Tech and quarterback Seth Doege, who is trying to put himself in Heisman contention. Coming into today's game against No. 3 Kansas State, the Red Raiders are averaging 42.86 points per game.
But I guess the main question is, who will start at quarterback?
In less than a quarter of work, McCoy had a better completion percentage and more yards than starter David Ash had throughout the game. McCoy also had the touchdown pass that saved the game.
Ash and McCoy battled all offseason, but Ash won the job. But as things start to get a little dicey for the Longhorns, going with the hot hand might not be a bad decision.
