A few years ago, the idea of Jeff Tedford being dumped by Cal seemed inconceivable. He was one of the hottest coaching names in America.
But as a very disappointing season for Cal nears its conclusion, Bears athletic director Sandy Barbour told the Contra Costa Times that she will meet with Tedford as soon as Sunday, a day after Cal finishes its season at Oregon State, to discuss his future as football coach.
If that sounds ominous for Tedford, it might be.
Tedford is 15-21 over the last three seasons and as the Contra Costa Times points out, three of those wins were against non-FCS teams. While Cal has suffered significant injuries this season, its 3-8 record is a bit startling. The Bears have a $321 million renovated stadium and can't afford losing seasons in those new and expensive digs.
"We need to resolve quickly what are the solutions to getting Cal football moving in the right direction," Barbour said in the Contra Costa Times story. "My first and foremost driver in any decision I will make is what's right for Cal."
Tedford led Cal to two 10-win seasons and a pair of top 15 finishes in the polls in a three-year stretch from 2004-06. At that point, the Bears were doing whatever they could to keep Tedford. Now they're in a situation where voluntarily keeping Tedford might be a difficult decision.
