South Florida really needs to hire a spellchecker for its awards

South Florida continues to honor its players with awards – awards with misspellings.

Last week, USF gave graduating punter Justin Brockhaus-Kann a special teams award, but spelled the word “offense” wrong and more importantly, spelled Brockhaus-Kann’s name wrong.

Well, those phonetically challenged folks at USF made another blunder Wednesday when senior tight end Evan Landi tweeted out a photo of his Lee Roy Selmon Award, which is given to the player who shows “the greatest courage perserverance and determination in pursuit of team goals.”

Now, I’ll give you a minute to look at it.

Not only is there a glaring lack of punctuation, but the word “perseverance” is spelled wrong.

I get it. It’s a tough word to spell. And really, it sounds like there should be an extra “r” there, but this is unacceptable. Either South Florida needs to do a better job of proofreading its awards or it needs to find another company to etch them.

The award is a nice gesture, but the execution, especially as an institution of higher learning, leaves a little something to be desired.
