Joker Phillips asks recruits to #ComePlayWRForTheJoker as a creepy recruiting pitch

New Florida wide receivers’ coach Joker Phillips is trying a new recruiting tactic on Twitter and it’s possibly creeping a lot of recruits out.

Phillips, who was fired as the head coach at Kentucky after last season, has linked himself to “The Joker” from the movie franchise Batman. He sent out a tweet Wednesday morning asking recruits to “#ComePlayWRForTheJoker” and attached a photo of Heath Ledger’s Joker character dressed in Florida’s blue and orange.

Yep, it’s as weird and as creepy as it sounds.

I get the branding. The name Joker is unique (even though his real name is Joe) and coaches are always trying to find an edge in recruiting. The Batman series is popular, the Joker is one of the most popular characters, yeah, I get it.

But that doesn’t mean this won’t just creep people out.

This tweet is also interesting because as a head coach, Phillips always seemed to be a bit of a no-nonsense type of guy. And this is a whole bucket of nonsense.

But at least it’s something people will talk about and ultimately remember. Let’s just hope he doesn’t start Photoshopping his head onto the Joker’s body.
