As we open the Sweet 16 Thursday night, Mike Gundy’s bracket is all but broken.
The Oklahoma State coach took some major risks in his second round, including picking Creighton and Iowa State upsets, and none of them paid off.
Consequently, he’s down 11 points to Louisiana Tech coach Skip Holtz and five points to LSU’s Les Miles.
Gundy has also lost all but two Final Four teams, and while his champion, Louisville, is still in the mix, there’s not enough points on the board to allow him to pull off some sort of major upset in the Bracket Challenge.
With that said, Les Miles survived the second round with all of his Final Four – Louisville, Ohio State, Indiana and Florida – totally intact. He’s the only coach with all of his Final Four remaining – Miles lost Wisconsin and Georgetown – and therefore the best shot to win it all.
Here’s how the coaches fared in the final games of the second round:
Skip Holtz
Correct: Duke, Ohio State, Kansas, Florida, Indiana, Miami
Incorrect: LaSalle, Florida Gulf Coast
Total points: 48
Les Miles
Correct: Duke, Ohio State, Kansas, Florida, Indiana, Miami
Incorrect: LaSalle, Florida Gulf Coast,
Total points: 42
Mike Gundy
Correct: Kansas, Florida, Indiana, Miami
Incorrect: Duke, Ohio State, La Salle, Florida Gulf Coast
Total Points: 37
In the Sweet 16, each game is worth four points so there’s room to improve.
Here are the picks for Saturday. If the coach does have a team in the mix, it’s noted with the word “OUT”
