Rutgers’ athletic department has spent the past few months raising money for those affected by Hurricane Sandy, and during the spring game on April 27, Rutgers football will honor the afflicted New Jersey towns by wearing special jerseys with the names of each of the 90 towns that needed reconstruction.

But now the Scarlet Knights are taking their Hurricane Sandy relief help one step further.

The team announced on its Facebook page Thursday that it is holding a contest for kids affected by the hurricane to play the final minutes of the Scarlet-White spring game. Kids are encouraged to submit a short essay or photos about the impact Hurricane Sandy had on them. The team will then choose 22 kids to play the final five minutes at High Point Solutions Stadium.

There’s more information on the Rutgers Football Facebook page.

What a great opportunity by Rutgers. There’s no doubt many kids were affected by Hurricane Sandy and could use a positive moment like this in their lives.

Rutgers has already done so much to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy that this contest seems to be the icing on the cake.

Can’t wait to see the video.
