Arizona is changing its uniforms for 2013, which includes some unique red, white and blue designs on the numbers and sleeves.
The Wildcats introduced the new threads with a video launch on their website Monday and reactions were mixed. Most of the comments were necessarily centered around the uniforms as a whole, but rather the numbers, which create a gradient look as they stream from red to blue or blue to red depending on the jersey.
This isn’t a new design. Arizona State and Arkansas both introduced the gradient looks for their numbers last year. But those two schools seemed to flow their colors. Arizona’s a little choppier, which gives it a weird 1980s or children’s PBS programming feel. The color scheme even creates a layer of purple, which just looks strange.
Arizona actually received a waiver from the NCAA to introduce these jerseys since an NCAA rule going into effect for the 2013 season states that numbers must "be of one solid color that itself is clearly in distinct contrast with the color of the jersey, irrespective of any border around the number.”
That same rainbow-esque design in on the sleeves as well.
The helmets, which come in red, white, blue and a really cool copper, have not changed.
What do you think of Arizona’s new duds?
