Thursday was Alabama's turn at the SEC Media Days, and Crimson Tide fans turned out in force to hear wisdom and get autographs from beloved leader and head coach Nick Saban. One such fan lavished praise on the coach - who has brought three BCS championships to Tuscaloosa, including the last two - in a rather, uh, unusual way:
"He's a winner, he just does what he wants to do," says Lee Allen, an Alabama fan from Decatur. "He's kind of like Hitler. He's a dictator. He brought us back to the top and I figure we're going to be here for a while. Money well spent."
Wait, what? Hitler? You mean that as a compliment? "Yeah," Allen says in between discreetly spitting tobacco juice into a water bottle in the lobby.
I'm sure Saban is very pleased to hear that comparison, which brings to mind the old Marge Schott quote about how Hitler was good when he rebuilt all of the roads in Germany before getting into that other stuff.
The whole AL.com story is a fun read into the frenzy that results when a successful Alabama dynasty gets rolling, including one fan bringing wooden nesting dolls for Saban and others waiting more than six hours to get an autograph, even if they already had one. (Allen, who offered the Hitler comparison, told AL.com he had already collected 100 Saban autographs over the years.)
Also, LOOK AT THIS HAT:
An Alabama fan waiting for Saban in the Wynfrey lobby paid $300 for this hat: http://t.co/wxIN7sMQMX // pic.twitter.com/59W9RNAm1I
