Andrew Maxwell has retained his starting quarterback job for the season opener against Western Michigan on Friday.
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday that the senior would start the opener but that sophomore Connor Cook would also see playing time.
From the Detroit News:
"I'm comfortable we have a No. 1 quarterback," Dantonio said in a vote of confidence for Maxwell. "He's competitive, has got great leadership skills."
Yes, we all know how important leadership skills are for a quarterback. However, it's never a monstrous endorsement of a quarterback's physical traits when it's the first thing that a coach mentions.
Through 13 games last season, Maxwell threw for 2,606 yards, 13 TDs and 9 interceptions. However, Le'Veon Bell, Michigan State's bellcow running back last year, is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so Maxwell will need to step up this season to hold off a challenge from Cook.
