Guess what Texas fans? Mack Brown thinks your team is going to be good this year.
Whew, that’s a relief.
Brown told the Texas marching band Tuesday he had confidence that the struggles of the past three seasons would turn into a strong showing this year.
When I’m asked, “How many do you think we win?’ What a dumb question, I say “13″. If I sent a message to you and our team and our fans that “oh, we’re going to win eight, and who’s here we’re going to lose to and how badly” – yes, we are going to win on Saturday.
I think I’m most excited because I think we’re good, and I’m ready for you all to reap the benefits and for our fans who have hung in there… I really think we have a chance in every game this year to win, and that’s what I want.
I mean, we still gotta play, we gotta coach and we all have to keep our mouths shut to do it, but I can’t wait to see that because I have worked my tail off for three years to make sure we’d get back to this point.
On one hand, you have to love Brown’s confidence because there’s no doubt Texas has fallen off the past few seasons (remember when they were playing for a national title?) But on the other hand, what’s he supposed to say? This is a man whose fanbase has essentially turned on him and wants him gone. If he doesn’t produce this season, the entire city of Austin might burn.
Quite honestly, Texas couldn’t have asked for a better schedule for a breakout season. The game at BYU during the second week will tell us a lot about the Longhorns, but there are a lot of winnable games on the schedule and a lot of favorable home contests.
The Big 12 is going to be a tough conference this year, but Texas should be right in the mix to challenge for the title and it’s first BCS appearance since that national championship berth.
If it doesn't, consider this the last time Brown speaks to the Longhorn band.
