Since this week’s slate of games isn’t exactly awe-inspiring, a couple games outside of the FBS are getting notice, including one very special game from the Division III Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference between Concordia College and St. Olaf College.
Why do we care about these lower-division rivals?
Because they play for the ugliest trophy in college sports.
The trophy is called “The Troll” and it was created to honor each school’s Scandinavian roots. And we all thought Michigan was angling for the troll trophy last weekend (HEY-O!).
It’s hairy, it’s creepy, it’s pretty fantastic.
And, we’re gonna be honest with you. The real reason we took an interest in this rivalry was because of St. Olaf College and the chance to add a YouTube clip of Rose Nyland’s greatest St. Olafisms. We’re a little disappointed Betty White isn’t St. Olaf’s honorary alternate mascot.
