Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez likely to miss game against South Dakota State

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is doubtful for the Huskers' game against South Dakota State on Saturday, and if he can't play, redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Armstrong will get the call under center.

From the Lincoln Journal-Star:

"If we were to (play) today, we'd probably start with Tommy Armstrong," Pelini said after Thursday's practice. "But you'll see Ronnie Kellogg. We want to make sure we look at this practice film. I haven't visited with Tim (Beck) since practice was over, but that's kind of the way we were leaning going into today."

Martinez has a turf toe injury and according to the Journal-Star, would be the first time in 32 games that he hasn't played. Kellogg is a senior, and while he'd provide experience for Nebraska under center if Martinez isn't able to go, it'd be a valuable audition for the future for Armstrong. Plus, against South Dakota State, there'd be a bit more margin for error if he struggled than versus, say, UCLA.

In that 41-21 loss to UCLA, Nebraska generated 146 yards of total offense in the second half with Martinez under center and hampered by the turf toe injury. After sacks, he finished with -13 rushing yards.
