The second-leading rusher in the country is going to be sidelined for a few games.
Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said that running back Paul James will miss "a few weeks" after being injured against Arkansas on Saturday. Flood termed the injury a "lower leg injury."
"He will be out for a few weeks," Flood said. "He will not be back this week or against Louisville. He's going to be out for a few weeks."
That Louisville game is October 10. Rutgers has a bye week coming up and plays SMU on October 5.
James entered the game as the country's leading rusher but fell behind Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon after the Badgers' big day on the ground against Purdue and his injury in the third quarter.
He's got 573 yards and is averaging over seven yards per carry. However, those are numbers that are going to be stagnant for a while. Flood said James will be back this season, but it's never wise to rush a running back from a leg injury.
Flood mentioned three names when asked about candidates to replace James.
"It is absolutely a 'Next man up' mentality on our football team," Flood said on his Monday teleconference. "Now we have other players that are going to get an opportunity to play. Savon Huggins and Justin Goodwin got an opportunity yesterday. You can add Desmon Peoples to that. All three of those guys can have a role and I think all three of them can bring really, really good things to that position and to our offense."
