Alabama has canceled its planned series with Michigan State in 2016 and 2017.

It would have been in Tuscaloosa in 2016 and in East Lansing in 2017 and potentially have pitted Alabama coach Nick Saban against a former team. The two teams played against each other in the 2011 Capital One Bowl.

From the Detroit Free Press:

“Alabama requested to cancel the series due to uncertainty with the SEC schedule,” Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis wrote in a text message today. “While disappointed, in the spirit of collegiality, we agreed to the request.”

Alabama also confirmed the report. With the SEC's recent expansion to 14 teams, the league may adopt a nine game schedule, one more than the current eight game conference slate each team has.

After the report emerged about the cancellation of the Michigan State series, the Tuscaloosa News reported that Alabama was in discussions for a neutral site game with a "big-name" opponent. Maybe that will be Texas and it'll pit Saban against his former employer? See what we did there?

We're kidding. We think.
