USC is willing to spend big bucks to lands its next head coach and according to ESPN.com’s Travis Haney, the University “is willing to extend an offer of up to $6 million a year.”

That salary would make the Trojans’ next coach the highest paid coach in the country, even more than Alabama’s Nick Saban.

“This hire means that much to them,” an industry source told Haney. “There’s only one USC. I talk to a lot of people who have worked there and they it’s the best place they’ve ever coached.”

The athletic department has been quiet ever since Lane Kiffin was fired back in September after a rough start. Since then, interim coach Ed Orgeron has led the resurgent Trojans to a 4-1 record headed into Saturday’s showdown with Stanford.

Orgeron is rumored to be in the discussion, but other names like Jack Del Rio and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin have also been thrown around to be candidates.

Above all, the name USC is reportedly focusing on is Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin.

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News first reported this last week, and Haney’s report also focuses on Sumlin being the top choice.

Wolf reported that the University hopes to make its hire in December, so we won’t have to wait long to find out which direction the Trojans go in.
