Attorney Robert Clayton is now looking into the beating of Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson on behalf of Virginia State.
Johnson said that as many as six Virginia State players attacked him at the pregame luncheon the day before the CIAA championship game, which was canceled after the incident.
VSU running back Lamont Daniel Britt has been charged with misemeanor assault and four other players have been questioned about the attack, which Johnson said happened in the bathroom. According to his head coach Connell Maynor, Johnson had swelling around his eye, "busted his lip and some other things."
According to VSU, Clayton's investigation should take around two weeks and the school is "committed to uncovering the facts surrounding this incident.
Johnson is 9-0 as Winston-Salem's starter and said he expects to play in WSSU's game against Slippery Rock on Saturday in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Because of the incident, Virginia State has been banned from postseason play.
The chancellor of WSSU wants further sanctions against Virginia State, too. From the AP:
WSSU Chancellor Donald Reaves on Monday called for further sanctions against Virginia State and said coach Latrell Scott exacerbated the problem after the fight because he "refused to cooperate and ... came very close on Friday afternoon to being arrested" for obstruction. He also said Scott, in his first year at Virginia Union, "went completely berserk" when asked to provide Miller's contact information after the fight.
