There haven’t been a whole lot of positive things for Cal to take out of this season. The Golden Bears finished a 1-11 year with a 63-13 loss at the hands of Stanford Saturday, but an announcement made Tuesday may give the program something to look forward to.
The university announced that its game against Oregon in 2014 will take place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers.
“Playing the first college football game at Levi’s Stadium provides an exceptional opportunity for our student-athletes, alumni, students and fans to be some of the first to experience the new venue, one that will soon play host to a Super Bowl,” Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said.
The game will take place on Friday, Oct. 24, and will be the first ever collegiate game at Levi’s Stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 49ers season. The facility seats 68,500 fans and will host Super Bowl L in 2016 and the annual Fight Hunger Bowl beginning next year.
“I know that our players will embrace the chance to play Oregon at Levi's Stadium next fall, and I'm sure our fans will create a great atmosphere for our team,” Cal head coach Sonny Dykes said. “This is a special opportunity to play in a stadium where the Super Bowl will be held in the near future and one that we feel can generate a tremendous overall experience for everyone involved.”
The game being played at Levi’s Stadium is also “expected to produce as much as a seven-figure dollar increase in incremental net revenue for the athletic department relative to a home game,” the release said.
