Wyoming has cut ties with coach Dave Christensen after five seasons.

The move comes after the Cowboys lost to Utah State 35-7 in the team’s season finale. Wyoming needed to win to become bowl eligible. The Cowboys finish 5-7, just a win better than a year ago.

“We have come to a point where our football program has not achieved at the level of success that we expect, and we know from past experience that we can be successful,” Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said in a statement.“It is with that in mind that we move forward in search of a new leader for Cowboy Football.

“We want to thank Coach (Dave) Christensen and his family for their five years of service to the University of Wyoming.”

Wyoming has finished 3-5 in the Mountain West each of the last two seasons and has not qualified for a bowl game since 2011. Christensen, who was 27-35 in his five seasons with the program, was the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2011 and led the Cowboys to bowl appearances in 2009 and 2011.

Christensen becomes the fifth head coach fired so far this season.

Even though Christensen had limited on-field success in the past couple years, he did give fans an epic, profanity-laced on-field rant when he got into a verbal fight with Air Force coach Troy Calhoun following a 28-21 loss last season. The whole ordeal happened at Wyoming on Military Appreciation Night. CAUTION: This video is NSFW.

Burman said he would begin the search for a replacement immediately.
