Less than a week after firing Dave Christensen, Wyoming has announced the new man that will lead the school's football program. After a few days of speculation, the university officially introduced Craig Bohl as the new head coach on Sunday.
Bohl had been the head coach at North Dakota State since 2003, winning National Championships at the FCS level the past two seasons. Bohl’s NDSU team is currently in the 2013 FCS Playoffs as the No. 1 seed and currently has a 12-0 record entering the third round. Bohl confirmed that he will stay to coach NDSU through its playoff run.
“Rarely do you get an opportunity to hire a head coach who has won multiple National Champions and has a reputation as a program builder,” Wyoming Athletic Director Tom Burman said.
“I am absolutely confident we hired one of the best football coaches in the country. All you have to do is look at his record, including several wins over FBS programs.”
According to a release, Bohl agreed to terms to be Wyoming’s 32nd head coach this weekend and will be paid a guaranteed $750,000 in his first year. The five-year contract will increase each successive year with incentives, the release said.
Bohl has compiled a 101-32 record as head coach at NDSU and his Bison defeated all four of the FBS teams they played in the past four years: Kansas in 2010, Minnesota in 2011, Colorado State in 2012, and Kansas State earlier this season. Overall in his 11 years at North Dakota State, Bohl’s teams had a 7-3 record against FBS teams.
Before becoming head coach at North Dakota State, Bohl was an assistant from 1984-2002 at Nebraska, Duke, Rice, Wisconsin and Tulsa.
