Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson was riding high after an upset win over Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game Friday night, and now Clawson has a brand new job.
Bowling Green confirmed on its website that Dave Clawson has been hired to be the next head coach at Wake Forest. Wake Forest then confirmed the hire.
A news conference to introduce Clawson is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"We are very pleased to have Dave Clawson leading our football program," said Wake Forest Director of Athletics Ron Wellman. "Dave is a proven winner and leader and has had great success at every institution he has coached. Dave has rebuilt every program that he has coached and has led each institution to a conference championship.
"He has developed a national reputation as a builder of programs. Dave's expectations for our program and players are extremely high. We have much to look forward to with his leadership of our program."
Clawson led Bowling Green to a 10-3 record and an invitation to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against Pittsburgh, the third bowl appearance for Bowling Green in Clawson’s five years there. His overall record with the Falcons was 32-31.
Prior to taking over at Bowling Green, Clawson was the offensive coordinator for Tennessee in 2008 and helped rebuild programs as head coach at Fordham and Richmond. He was named national coach of the year at both of those schools.
Clawson joins a Wake Forest program that was 4-8 this season – its fifth straight year under .500. Former Wake coach Jim Grobe stepped down after 13 seasons as the Demon Deacons’ coach in which he compiled a 77-82 overall record.
