In the minutes after Rice won its first outright conference championship since 1957, the Owls’ locker room was a jovial place. As the team celebrated, coach David Bailiff and the Owls received a locker room visit from a representative of the Liberty Bowl.
After congratulating the team on its Conference USA title, the representative gave the team a brief history of the Liberty Bowl, college football’s seventh-oldest bowl game, before extending an invitation to the game on New Year’s Eve Day against 6-6 Mississippi State in Memphis.
Coach Bailiff accepted the invitation and the team’s reaction was awesome.
The Liberty Bowl is not on the caliber of a BCS bowl obviously, but these players don’t care. After an impressive 10-3 campaign and a 41-24 C-USA title game win over Marshall, the Owls have plenty to be proud about.
