It’s been nearly two months since Eastern Michigan receiver Demarius Reed was tragically shot and killed in his apartment complex and now police may know why.

According to MLive.com, two men targeted Reed because he was wearing expensive clothes and an expensive-looking belt buckle. The two men – Kristopher Pratt and Ed Reed – allegedly planned to rob Reed at a party on Oct. 18.

“Apparently, he was wearing a very expensive belt and had some clothes on,” Officer Brooke Mullender said in her testimony. “They decided to rob him and during the robbery he was shot … multiple times.”

Reed was shot dead at 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 18. He was 20 years old.

“They found him in the stairwell at the apartment building, attempted to rob him,” [Detective Joe] Yuhas said. “Mr. Reed was then shot, two separate occasions, and robbed of personal property.”

Multiple people reported hearing gunshots about 3:30 a.m. but none called the police. At least one person walked past Reed’s body after he was shot and didn’t report it to police.

At 7:30 a.m., Reed’s roommate found him dead in the apartment stairwell. The police investigation began immediately and would include local, state and federal officials.

When police found Reed in the hallway of his apartment complex, his wallet and cell phone were missing. Those were the only items stolen during the robbery.

Pratt and Reed are scheduled to return to court in January and could face life in prison if convicted.
